Note to All

This is a blog for homeowners who have questions regarding fences and fencing. Have a question about fences ask our experts and we will do our best to provide the answers. You may also choose to email me directly at ken@raleighfences.com. Please click on comments link below to make a comment or to ask a question. Have a question about fence types? Home Owners Association requirement questions? Ask us about gates and what we do to insure less problems.?

If you stop a think about it the gates are the only thing you really use on a fence. So if your gates are built well and do not sag or have other issues then you will love your new fence. If your gates have sagging or warping issues you won't like your fence. Make sure whoever installs your fence uses 6x6 wood posts on a 5 or 6 foot wood fence for more stability. Also make sure if you have a double gate or drive through gate that they install a 4' can bolt and not a shorter 2 foot one which you have to stay bent over while opening the gate

Comments:
Do you also come out and do an on my site at my home estimate?

Yes, we will come to your home measure the area to be fenced. Then we will take the time to sit down with you listen to your needs and your concerns. Then we will provide an estimate that matches exactly the needs you have. It will be based on the type of fence and the topography.

Can you build the fence on the property line? If so how is that determined?

We can nuild a fence on the property line if the homeowner wants it there and the survey pins are visible. Typically we build a fence inside the line by about 4-6". The reason for this is to protect the homeowner from a problem with the neighbor. Occassionaly a pin could be moved either from a bulldozer levelling the area for grass or from other means. Some Home Owner Associations have specific requirements as to where the fence can be built.

So there is no county ordinanace that the fence must be 3 ft off the property line? My fence is inside my prop line by 3 ft and have just found out due to the lot next door being built. I was told that that is the 'law' when questioning why.

None that I am aware of. However I am only familiar with Raleigh area and Fayetteville area. There are no laws that I am aware of which dictate the distance a fence needs to be from the property line. Some HOA's do have requirements but no municipal laws that I know of, or that I have run into doing our installations

I live in CA which wood fence material is the best for conditions out here, not to expensive my neighbors are cheap.

I live in an older neighborhood without a formal HOA. What is the tallest privacy fence that can be built inside Raleigh's city limits if no HOA exists?

Generally speaking 6" is as high as you can go. However there are occasions when you can go to an eight foot height, such as if you are backed up to a commercial property.

"......get a survey from your borough....."

What's the normal fee for getting a survey?

Surveys can range from a few hundred dollars and up. Depending on what you need the survey for you may be able to ask the survey company to just find your eip's (metal pins in the ground). They generally charge around a hundred dollars for that service.
