Steel versus Aluminum Ornamental Fencing

By Ken Plain

Looking at Ornamental fences and trying to cut through all the hype to find the one that is best for you?  Here is some background information that will help.

When most people hear the words steel fence, they immediately think of wrought iron fence.  And with good reason.  Wrought iron fences are known to have rust issues.  There are several reason for that, including the following.  Wrought iron is generally welded and welds unless they are cleaned very well have a tendency to rust over time.  Also wrought iron fencing is heavier and more costly than extruded steel or aluminum.

For several years after Steel fence products became popular I continued to recommend only aluminum.  I wanted to wait and make sure the product stood up as it was supposed to do.  Once I was certain it was a superior product I began recommending it.  Unlike older metal fences, the newer extruded steel product is finished more like a car is.  Hence it has a 20 yr warranty on the finish just like aluminum does.

Steel has proven itself to be a solid product that is much much stronger than aluminum and will provide years of beauty. add to that the cost is very competitive with aluminum, you can see why steel has rapidly become the ornamental fence of choice.
